INTER-SCHOOL COMPETITIONS

4th Year - Option Four

I'm sure you have all heard about the Triwizard Tournament, the legendary competition between Europe's three wizarding schools: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute. After the first holding in the late 13th century, it took place every five years, until 1792.

The tasks of each Triwizard Tournament were designed to test the magical abilities, intelligence and courage of the representatives of the participating schools, the Champions. They were often dangerous, sometimes involving powerful magical creatures. So it is not surprising that over the years many Champions and sometimes even the judges were injured during the tournament.

That exactly was the reason of the cancellation of the Triwizard Tournament in 1792. A cockatrice went rogue during one task, injuring the headmasters of the three schools, who served as judges. That coupled with a high death count led to the abolition until the tournament was eventually revived for a single holding in 1994, with new and improved safety regulations to ensure the safety of everyone invilved. However, that event led to the death of one of the Champions by the hands of Death Eaters, and the event was discontinued permanently.

The only still ongoing competition involving Hogwarts seems to be the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship. Aside Hogwarts, it includes Uganda's Uagadou School of Magic, Russia's Koldovstoretz and Japan's Mahoutokoro. The competition was created in 1407, after the tragic death of young potioneer Quintia McQuoid, who died after drinking an improperly brewed Cure for Ague. It is held every seven years, though it is unknown if it is still held to this day.It is also unknown what exactly participating students had to do. As it is a Potions competition, it is easy to assume that they just have to brew different complicated potions. But the cup is held in an enchanted garden, filled with at least one troll, gigantic serpents and banshees.

There might be more competitions, there are eleven major wizarding schools after all, and we only have records about competitions involving Hogwarts.

HOMEWORK:

1) Come up with at least two more competitions. It is entirely up to you what the subject of the competition is and which schools compete.

2) Would a Quidditch League involving all eleven schools work? Why or why not?
