THE FACES OF THE FIGHTERS

NEWT Option Four

You may have learned about the two Wizarding Wars during your studies as a 1st-4th year. However, in History of Magic, we only covered the events of the wars -- not the people who played important roles in their outcomes. This lesson will cover figures including Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Remus Lupin. To learn more about the founder of the Order of the Phoenix, Albus Dumbledore, you should check out the NEWT Option Five.

Alastor Moody, more commonly known as Mad-Eye Moody, was a crucial member of the Order of the Phoenix during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. He is considered by many to be the most famous Auror of all time and his work as an Auror contributed to the imprisonment of a great number of Death Eaters and other magical criminals. Most of Moody's contributions during the First Wizarding War were connected to his work as an Auror. He took on a greater leadership role in the Second Wizarding War, when he spearheaded the reformation of the Order of the Phoenix and became a part of the Advance Guard. He participated in multiple battles against Death Eaters and took on a leading role in guarding Harry Potter's life -- a role that ultimately resulted in his death during the Battle of the Seven Potters in 1997.

Kingsley Shacklebolt was another prominent figure in the Order of the Phoenix and, as with Moody, worked as an Auror. While his efforts during the First Wizarding War are largely unrecorded, Shacklebolt served in a leadership role in the Order during the Second Wizarding War. He continued his work as an Auror, which he used as a front to gather secret information from the Ministry of Magic and feed it to the Order. Shacklebolt also worked as a part of the Advance Guard and participated in multiple battles against Death Eaters. In 1996 when Rufus Scrimgeour became Minister of Magic, Shacklebolt took on the role of protecting the Muggle Prime Minister. In late 1997 after the fall of the Ministry of Magic, Shacklebolt was forced to go on the run. During this time, however, he continued working for the resistance and played a role in protecting muggles.

The third leader we will be covering today is Remus Lupin. Lupin joined the original Order of the Phoenix after graduating from Hogwarts due to his failure to find employment because of his lycanthropy. After the First Wizarding War, Lupin taught Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts during the 1993-1994 school year. He rejoined the Order of the Phoenix after Voldemort's return, where he was a member of the Advance Guard and fought in multiple battles against Death Eaters. However, his most significant efforts during the war came from Lupin's work as a spy within an underground community of werewolves. During this time, Lupin attempted to convince werewolves to join Dumbledore's side in the war.

HOMEWORK:

1) Find one Death Eater or leadership figure who fought on Voldemort's side during one or both of the Wizarding Wars. What were they known for? How did they contribute to Voldemort's efforts in the war(s)? Note: you may not focus on Voldemort or Grindelwald for this question.

2) Do some research on Severus Snape's involvement in the Wizarding Wars. What did he do? What makes him different from other Death Eaters and from other members of the Order of the Phoenix? Do you think he should be considered a leadership figure? Why or why not?
