INTER-SPECIES RELATIONSHIPS

1st Year - Option Two

Humans always had the habit of starting conflicts with other humans. So it isn't really surprising that we wizards started fighting with other, magical species. In this lesson, I'll try to give you a short overview, though I could probably fill a whole new class with this topic alone. So it will be part of your homework do some research on your own.

Let's start with muggles. Or No-Majs, No-Maguiqes or whatever you want to call them. And yes, we are counting them as a different species here. For centuries, we have lived next to them. While most of us don't mind our non-magical neighbours, some parts of the wizarding population see themselves as superior, because they are able to perform magic, while muggles can't do that. Certain radical groups, usually consisting of pure-blooded witches and wizards, seem to like the idea of showing of their 'superiority' by using their magic to torture or kill muggles. Especially in the 20th century, under the dark wizards Gellert Grindelwald and Lord Voldemort these muggle mass murders took place.

We also see this superiority complex in our relationship with Centaurs and Merpeople. Though both were offered the status as Being, both declined it as they would share the status with creatures like vampires, which they didn't want. So they stayed classified as Beasts. And because they are 'just' Beasts while we are Beings, they are obviously inferior to us, right?

But what about other creatures with powerful magical capabilities of their own? We have always mistreated Elves, abusing their submissiveness to force them into slavery, forcing them to work while punishing them for the slightest mistakes. And yet, they are happy to serve and wouldn't give it away. And of course we also have to briefly talk about the goblin rebellions. Goblin rebellions took place multiple times over the last few hundred years. The reason (or reasons) why they happened are not clear. There are many theories what ultimately started them, but they are just that: Theories.*

*Goblin rebellions are further covered in the Third Year
