HISTORY OF MAGIC
1st Year - Option Five
Your studies in this subject will allow you to examine various events throughout wizarding history through a close-up lens. However, while it is important that you learn of specific events, it is also important that you have an overview of the history of magic at large in order to have the relevant historical context necessary for a deep understanding.

Before 1000 AD:

In Ancient Greece, some of the earliest known magical spells and instruments were created, including the Horcrux, invented by Herpo the Foul, and the Patronus. Before 100 AD was a time of cooperation between Muggles and Wizards.

382 BCE - The Ollivander Family arrives in Britain with the Romans and begins selling wands

Circa 990 - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is founded by Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, Godric Gryffindor, and Salazar Slytherin

The Medieval Era (1000 - 1400 AD):

Muggles begin to fear Wizardkind

11th Century - Quidditch was introduced to the Wizarding World as a result of the writings made by Gertie Kettle on her observations of the first match conducted in Queersditch Marsh.

11th Century - The Chamber of Secrets is created by Salazar Slytherin

Circa 1100 - The Sword of Gryffindor is created

1163 - The first Quidditch Team, Puddlemere United, is formed
-
1269 - The Golden Snidget is introduced to Quidditch after Barberus Bragge becomes Chief of the Wizards' Council

1289 - The International Warlocks' Convention is held

1294 - The Triwizard Tournament is established between Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Hogwarts

14th Century - Witch burnings increase due to growing Muggle fears of magic
-
14th Century - The Golden Snitch is invented by Bowman Wright and introduced to Quidditch


The Renaissance (1400 - 1700 AD):

1473 - The first Quidditch World Cup is held

1474 - Gringotts Wizarding Bank is founded

1500 - The Leaky Cauldron pub is built by Daisy Dodderidge

17th Century - St. Mungo's Hospital is founded by Mungo Bonham

1600s - No-Maj settlement begins in America

1612 - The Goblin Rebellion of 1612 occurs near Hogsmeade Village

Circa 1630 - Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is founded

1631 - The Ministry of Magic bans all beings except for Wizards from carrying a wand

1637 - The Werewolf Code of Conduct is written

1692 - The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy is put into effect. In America, the Salem Witch Trials culminate.

1693 - MACUSA is founded


Wizarding Secrecy (1700 - 1900 AD):

1707 - As a result of the International Statute of Secrecy, the Ministry of Magic is founded and the first Minister is Ulick Gamp

1717 - The Killing, Cruciatus, and Imperius Curses are ruled as Unforgiveable by the Ministry of Magic
-
1789 - The American Wizarding World is exposed by Bartholomew Barebone
-
1790 - Rappaport's Law is put in place in America, creating strict segregation between No-Maj and magical communities

1830 - The Hogwarts Express is created
-
Circa 1852 - Platform 9 3/4 is implemented by Minister Orpington

1865 - Goblins are given full control of Gringotts

1875 - The Ministry of Magic passes the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery

1881 - Albus Dumbledore is born

Circa 1883 - Gellert Grindelwald is born

The Modern Era (1900 - 1980 AD):

1905 - Grindelwald steals the Elder Wand from Gregorovitch

1926 - Tom Marvolo Riddle, later Lord Voldemort, is born

1930s - The "Pure-Blood Directory" is published
-
1938 - Tom Riddle starts at Hogwarts

1942 - Tom Riddle murders his father and grandparents and creates his first horcrux: Marvolo's ring

1943 - Tom Riddle opens the Chamber of Secrets and releases the Basilisk

1945 - Dumbledore defeats Grindelwald

1947 - The Werewolf Register is introduced

1965 - Rappaport's Law is repealed in America

1966 - Albus Dumbledore becomes the Headmaster of Hogwarts

1968 - Squib Right's Marches occur, followed by the Pure-blood Riots in response

1970 - Lord Voldemort rises to power

1980 - Harry Potter is born
